Primary Cells

Asterand Bioscience has extensive scientific expertise in the isolation and propagation of human primary cells. Primary cells offer the closest known comparison to the original tissue. Cells are isolated from both normal and diseased tissue. All donor material is confirmed for tissue type and diagnosis by our certified Pathologists and the resulting cells are known to be free of common human pathogens and are sterility tested. Each lot of cells is provided with available donor clinical data and drug history.

Asterand Bioscience offers primary lung cells, including human bronchial epithelial cells (HuBECs) and parenchymal fibroblasts, isolated from non-diseased lung or from donors with Cystic Fibrosis, Pulmonary Fibrosis, Asthma or Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Human cancer associated fibroblasts (HuCAFs) are isolated from a variety of human tumor types. Chondrocytes and synovial fibroblasts are isolated from non-diseased donors or donors with degenerative joint diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Human Normal and Diseased Lung

Cystic Fibrosis Bronchial Epithelial Cells; Day 7 post seeding (orig. mag. x100)

Asterand Bio’s primary lung cells are human bronchial epithelial cells (HuBECs) and parenchymal fibroblasts, isolated from non-diseased lung or the lungs of donors with: idiopathic and non-idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, Cystic Fibrosis, Asthma or COPD.  This research-use only product is suitable for use in the development of functional 2D and 3D cell based assays, analysis of molecular targets, the identification of new diagnostic and prognostic markers as well as additional assays and platforms. Asterand Bio’s bronchial epithelial cells and parenchymal fibroblasts are derived from single donors and are cryopreserved after secondary culture.  All cases are provided with clinical data.

Bronchial Epithelial Cells: When cultured under air-liquid interface conditions, human bronchial epithelial cells are valuable for the study of many of the functions of the airway including mucociliary differentiation, mechanisms of mucus secretion, epithelial ion transport, and epithelial wound healing. Asterand Bio’s bronchial epithelial cells from donors with cystic fibrosis carry the ΔF508 CFTR mutation and are a valuable tool for the study of the underlying ion transport defect of the disease and for the identification of drugs to correct the defect.

 

Human Cancer Associated Fibroblasts

Fibroblasts are involved in normal growth, healing, wound repair, and the day-to-day physiological activities of every tissue and organ in the body. When associated with carcinomas, they have been implicated in tumor progression. Asterand Bioscience provides fibroblasts isolated from freshly resected tumor, as well as fibroblasts from the normal tissue at the margin of the tumor. Cells are cryopreserved after a limited number of passages and are provided as frozen ampoules. All cases are provided with Asterand Bio’s standard set of clinical data.

Diseased and Normal Synovial Fibroblasts and Chondrocytes

Synovial fibroblasts are implicated in several degenerative joint diseases, most notably in rheumatoid arthritis where they are directly involved in the pathogenesis and osteoarthritis, where they may contribute to the disease state. Furthermore, Asterand Bioscience provides synovial fibroblasts from the synovium of patients having joint replacement surgery to researchers looking to understand the causes of degenerative joint diseases. We also provide isolated synovial fibroblasts isolated from joints with no evidence of disease for comparative studies. In many cases, Asterand Bioscience can also provide chondrocytes from the same patient. Cells are cryopreserved after a limited number of passages and are provided as frozen ampoules. All cases are provided with Asterand Bio’s standard set of clinical data.

Chondrocytes, the the cells giving rise to cartilage, are involved in the pathophysiology of several joint diseases. Asterand Bioscience provides chondrocytes dissociated from the diseased cartilage to researchers looking to understand the causes of degenerative joint diseases. We also provide isolated chondrocytes from joints with no evidence of disease for comparative studies. In many cases, Asterand Bioscience can also provide synovial fibroblasts from the same patient. We cryopreserve our chondrocytes after a limited number of passages and can be provided as frozen ampoules or in flasks. As per usual, all cases are provided with Asterand Bio’s standard set of clinical data.
